Pizazz, Sizzle, Satisfaction: Playing the Ad Game
by M.T. Hyatt

While advertising has become more scientific and sophisticated in the last few years, it's still fun! It's an interesting and fast-moving field and provides the opportunity to work with and learn about many different corporate structures and industries. It involves a little 'show biz' because many contacts are with media. Promotions, press, and public relations events are part of the territory, and you can also meet a lot of business and community leaders.

When my daughter, Dana, was 5, she came home to tell us about a conversation she had at school that day. She and two friends were discussing what they wanted to be when they grew up. "Katie's mother is a doctor, so she wants to become a doctor, too," Dana told us with excitement, "and Shannon's mom and Dad are lawyers, so Shannon will go to work with them, when she is a lawyer." My husband, who is also in advertising, and I looked at each other, and I held my breath while he asked Dana what she wanted to be. With a huge grin on her face, she said, "I want to be in the circus!" She had been to enough car sales and state fairs with magicians, clowns, and face painting, petting zoos and trick dogs, that from her perspective, that's what we did! Well, I've always felt that it takes a little touch of Barnum & Bailey to be successful with many client pro-motions. Enthusiasm and excitement about a business, a promotion, or a new idea or concept are contagious. And if you feel that way about a product or service you are marketing, advertising, or selling, your audience will catch that same sense of exhilaration. Employees start generating more business, and customers natural-ly respond to your message. Advertising and the media present great career opportunities for women. Many women in the Albuquerque area have either founded successful adver-tising agencies or marketing firms, or are extremely knowledgeable, influential, and well-respected profes-sionals in the media (both in management and sales). In fact, several have been consistently ranked among New advertisers on the Web!

The potential for growth and advancement in these two related fields is almost limit-less. A strong communications or market-ing background, flair for art and design, writing ability, and good business intelli-gence are among the skills these outstand-ing women have brought to the advertis-ing market in New Mexico and beyond. These women are the power in New Mexico advertising and broadcast media. There are many more women in publish-ing (such as our own Jill Duval, publisher of New Mexico WOMAN and the Albuquerque Women In Business Directory) who will attest to their love of the marketing field. Advertising, broad-cast, and media all require mind-numbing hours of planning, creative work, and research (to stay current with trends and developments). The competition in the advertising field is fierce. The deadlines are intense and difficult to live with on a daily basis. But there is no other career or field that provides the opportunities and the possibilities, the challenge and the fun, of the ad game.
