Because she is a vice president and marketing manager of an international engineering and design firm, one might assume Jennifer Martinek is an intimidating personality. But upon meeting her, those assumptions are immediately dispelled. And upon getting to know her, one learns she genuinely strives to make life better for her fellow New Mexicans.

Over the years, Jennifer has been instrumental in several key engineering projects throughout the state and in Albuquerque. Lately, her talents are tapped at HDR, Inc., an architectural, engineering, and consulting firm with more than 130 locations worldwide. HDR is the company handling two projects that have generated quite a bit of attention in New Mexico of late: the new Rail Runner Commuter System already up and running along part of the Rio Grande Corridor, and a proposed Modern Streetcar System that would run along Albuquerque’s Central Avenue from San Mateo Boulevard to Atrisco.

And it can be done in four simple steps:

1. Develop a habit.
Now, do not kid yourself. Properly starting a new business can be overwhelming and time consuming. But to keep from getting lost along the way, think of your business development in terms of “a single daily action.” Make starting your new business a routine. For instance, today you might call your local regulatory agency to inquire about the business license requirements in your area. Tomorrow you may look into getting your stationary and business cards.

In all likelihood, you may not be able to spend every day working on your new business, but it is important to schedule time every week to work on making your dream a reality. If you can’t work on starting your business on a daily basis, at least do it on a weekly basis.
