Tax Time

Woman’s History Month:
New Mexico’s Earliest Women
By Irene I. Blea, Ph.D.
Women are inspired by those who came before them. Until recently, most of New Mexico’s captivating history was researched, documented, and published by men about men. As women’s scholarship expands, we discover that the state has an equally fascinating women’s history.
It begins with prehistoric eras, when native women endured and traveled in hostile environments. Indigenous women lived, gave birth, and basically lent to the state traditions, motifs, foods, and spirituality that today draw millions of tourists to New Mexico each year. These women were joined by Spanish women, who brought language, different social norms, and religion, which blended to uniquely enrich the state. American pioneer women subsequently added to the nature and character of New Mexico.
A brief profile of New Mexico women’s history can be greatly expanded, but must include Lozen, highly revered for her physical, mental, and spiritual power in advising her brother Victorio during the Apache resistance to U.S. encroachment onto Indian land in the1800s.
